Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty but Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages as group winners as they earned a 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund, who also secured their place in the last 16 with a match to spare.
Mahrez’s penalty in the second half was City’s best chance in a match that saw Pep Guardiola’s side create few chances, with Erling Haaland brought off at half-time on his return to his former side. But Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made the save down to his right as Dortmund held on to claim the result they needed in order to finish as runners-up in Group G.
The German side had the better of the opening half and had the best chance of the opening period, which was put wide by Youssoufa Moukoko. The draw suited both sides, however, after Sevilla beat Copenhagen 3-0 earlier in the day.
