Is Davis Mills really getting a fair shot to succeed as the Texans’ starting quarterback?

The Houston Texans are committed to Davis Mills, at least for 2022.

The former 2021 third-rounder from Stanford is being a chance to show the organization he is worthy of being the club’s starting quarterback in the near future. However, Mills may not be getting a truly fair shot to show general manager Nick Caserio what he can do in a loaded offense.

According to Doug Kyed from Pro Football Focus, the Texans haven’t exactly surrounded Mills with a talented enough supporting cast to help out the second-year signal caller.

The Texans and Atlanta Falcons have the lowest NFL win total betting odds listed for the 2022 season at an over/under of 4.5 wins. Houston still isn’t providing Mills with considerable help, as his top playmakers are wide receivers Brandin CooksNico Collins and Chris Conley, running backs Rex BurkheadMarlon Mack and Dameon Pierce and tight ends Pharaoh Brown and Brevin Jordan.

Where Mills is getting help that hasn’t been noted by PFF is along the offensive line. The Texans hired former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line coach George Warhop, and with him came one of his pet cats, guard A.J. Cann, in free agency. The Texans also picked up the fifth-year option for right tackle Tytus Howard and reworked two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil’s contract. Houston added more flexibility to their offensive line with the first-round selection of former Atascocita High School and Texas A&M product Kenyon Green. Mills shouldn’t have a turnstile of blockers in front of him as he did his rookie year.

Whether it succeeds or not, the Texans have also adjusted their philosophy. Under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, Houston will be more committed to the run, and the run game is always a quarterback’s best friend. If the running backs can take pressure off Mills, it should improve the 2022 portion of his curriculum vitae.
