But like the latest Dahmer screening, is the gripping series based on true events? Here's what we know.
Is Candy based on a true story?
In a nutshell, yes. Candy Montgomery was a Texan woman who met victim Betty Gore at a church service in the 1970s. The two soon became very close friends, often spending time with one another as well as their children.
However, the tides turned when Candy was alleged to have started having an extramarital affair with Betty's husband, Allen despite being married herself. This ended after Betty gave birth to a child with Allen, but Candy and Betty stayed close.
On the night of Betty's murder, Friday, 13th June 1980, Candy claimed that she had visited her friend's property to pick up a bathing suit for Betty's older daughter, as the girls were having a sleepover. Betty allegedly then confronted Candy about the affair, with the latter admitting to it and going into detail with regards to the six or seven month period.
Candy then said that Betty attempted to attack her with an axe, leading to a wrestle for control between the pair. Eventually, Candy managed to wield the weapon and said that she acted in self defence, striking Betty with it.
When Betty's body was discovered, Candy found herself as the main suspect of a murder investigation and was subsequently arrested and charged. The trial itself lasted just days and took place in McKinney, Texas.
Montgomery undertook a polygraph test before the trial to indicate that she was telling the truth, and she was subsequently found not guilty and acquitted of murder by a judge and jury.
Since Candy's trial, she has steered clear of the public eye, with no disclosed details as to what she is doing now or where she is living.
Candy is now available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
