Irvine Vics legend Kevin Adam signs up for second spell as boss tips him for record books

Irvine Vics legend Kevin Adam has signed up for a second spell with the club.

The 32-year-old striker, who sits second in Vics’ all-time scoring list, became a fans' favourite during a decade of service between 2009 and 2019.

Now, after spells at Dalry Thistle and Craigmark, he's back - with Andy Clarkson's club record of 144 goals firmly in his sights.

And boss Dougie MacDuff is backing the frontman to rediscover his shooting boots at the Westenders - and write himself into the record books.

He said: "Kev's 12 goals away from the record, and without being disrespectful to anyone, you'd have to fancy him to get that in our league next season.

"I'm delighted to get him on board. He's an experienced boy and his record speaks for itself. His attitude is also first class and he's a smashing guy to have around the dressing room."

MacDuff has also moved to snap up goalkeeper Owen McCallum, formerly of St Peters and Lesmahagow, central defender Steven Gaffney, formerly of St Anthony's, and forward John McLaughlan from the amateur ranks.

He hopes to add at least a few more fresh faces to his squad having retained 12 players from last season.

Among those re-signed are Franny Kilpatrick, brothers Ciaran and Declan Walsh, twins Shane and Chris Jackson, Mark Beveridge, Ewan Farrell, Stephen Jackson and captain Fraser MacDuff.

Vics' preparations for life in the West of Scotland League Third Division began on May 28. They return to action a week on Saturday against Albion Rovers in their own pre-season tournament.

And MacDuff, who had just two weeks to lay the foundations of a team before the big kick-off last season, is delighted with the way his squad is shaping up.

He added: "I've got to be happy when you look at the position we were in a year ago. That's 10 training sessions under our belt so far and we're getting 20-plus boys at them. Once the games start though, that will be the proof in the pudding."
