Ironic that BJP talking of Quit India Movement Day, counters Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP’s ‘Corruption, dynasty, appeasement – quit India’ campaign by stating that it is an irony that those who were never a part of the freedom movement were talking of Quit India Movement.

The BJP launched a campaign on Quit India Movement Day saying ‘Corruption – Quit India’, ‘Dynasty – Quit India’ and ‘Appeasement – Quit India’ to attack the Congress-led 26-party opposition bloc called INDIA, which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

Countering the BJP campaign, Congress MP and media head Jairam Ramesh tweeted and said, “It is quite the irony that those who were never part of the Freedom movement, those who never supported the Quit India movement, and those whose ideological forebears supported the British government, are talking of Quit India today.”

He said BJP’s RSS – BJP’s ideological parent – actively opposed Mahatma Gandhi Quit India Movement of August 1942. “While Gandhiji was launching the Movement, Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Jan Sangh, was in an alliance government with the Muslim League in Bengal,” he said.

Ramesh asked the BJP to quit. “Instead, 1. Those who are Quiet on Manipur burning must Quit; 2. Those who are Quiet on the intolerable price rise of essential commodities, petrol, diesel and LPG must Quit; and 3. Those who are Quiet on their quid pro quo relationship with Adani must Quit,” he tweeted..

The PM on Wednesday said in a post on X, “Tributes to the greats who took part in the Quit India Movement. Under the leadership of Gandhi Ji, this Movement played a major role in freeing India from colonial rule. Today, India is saying in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Dynasty Quit India. Appeasement Quit India.”

The PM’s views were endorsed by all BJP leaders. Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in his tweet, said, “New India is saying in Amrit Kaal. Corruption – Quit India. Nepotism – Quit India. Appeasement - Quit India. Every social evil – Quit India. #QuitIndia.”

Several others, such as home minister Amit Shah, information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur, women and child development minister Smriti Irani and party’s social media head Amit Malviya endorsed the PM’s views.

The echoes of the campaign were also heard in both Houses of Parliament.
