Irish weather forecast: Miserable week ahead with rain and colder than average temperatures expected

Batten down the hatches is the message from Met Eireann as we brace for a week of rain and colder than average temperatures.

The national forecaster says we're in for a miserable start to the week with wet, cool and cloudy conditions expected.

And those conditions are not expected to ease anytime soon with unsettled weather likely to stick around until next weekend.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Today will start off cloudy and misty in places, with outbreaks of rain.

"Sunny intervals will break through later on and it will become mainly dry across the western half of the country this afternoon.

"The rain will be heaviest and most persistent in east Leinster.

"Feeling cool in northerly winds, increasing fresh and gusty as the day goes on, with strong winds developing near exposed coasts.

"Top temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees."

Temperatures will drop tonight with the mercury resting between 3 and 7C.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the forecaster added: "Any lingering rain near the east coast will clear early on Tuesday morning, to leave a largely dry day countrywide.

"Sunny spells will occur in many places, however, mostly cloudy conditions will prevail near the east coast, with cloud increasing over the eastern half of the country during the afternoon.

"Top temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

"Brisk northerly winds will back northwest and become mainly light towards evening."

Low pressure is expected to dominate our weather for the remainder of the week with Met Eireann forecasting persistent rain and colder than average temperatures that may last into next weekend.
