Irish trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon was visibly moved last night as he collected the prestigious Steeplechase Horse Eclipse award in Florida.
Hewick was ridden by Jordan Gainford when he won America’s biggest steeplechase prize, the Grand National, back in October. He was nominated for this award off the back of that result. Last night the €800 bargain buy was crowned the 2022 champion for both Hanlon and owner TJ McDonald.
As he accepted the honour Hanlon emotionally said "He's been a very good horse for us, for the whole family. I bought him at my own local sales for 800 quid and he's after winning half a million. But tonight is definitely the biggest night of my life. Thank you everyone."

Hewick has also been successful on this side of the Atlantic with wins in the Gold Cup at Sandown and The Galway Plate in 2022.
