Irish teen ensures girlfriend arrives to her debs in style - via a helicopter

A teenager ensured his girlfriend had the most unique entrance for her debs in Monaghan by flying her there in a helicopter.

While other couples arrived in limos, tractors and lorries, the chopper's arrival left both attendees and locals stunned.

Ethan Sherry, 19, has a passion for flying and became one of the youngest people to get his pilot licence at the age of just 17, so when it came to taking his girlfriend Shannon Convie to her end of school debs last week, he knew just what to do.

When he suggested a helicopter entrance for the St Catherine's College Armagh debs, 18-year-old Shannon, who also has an interest in flying, was on board.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Ethan told how he flew to Shannon's home in Maghery to pick her up after getting permission from Armagh Rugby Club to land in their car park.

From there the pair made their way to Monaghan, where the formal was taking place, while many others boarded a bus.

Tyrone man Ethan, who had dreamed of becoming a commercial pilot before discovering he's colour-blind, said: "There were a lot of people who were pretty surprised, people arrive in tractors and lorries but this sort of blew that out of the water.

"People were quite impressed by it. I think people were surprised by a helicopter arriving out of nowhere. Unfortunately it was not an option to fly to the venue as there was nowhere to land nearby."

To make the day even more special, it was Ethan's 19th birthday so it was a double celebration for the pair, who have been together one year.

Talking about his own love of flying, Ethan, who first took to the skies at the age of 13, said he hoped he could still make his dream of making a career from it come true.

"It is a passion, people like golf but for me it is flying, it is something I have always wanted to do.

"I left school after my GCSEs (Junior Cert) but I found out while doing tests that I was colour-blind but there's always another route into it. I am now looking at training to be a flight instructor. It was hard at the time to find that out."
