Fans have hit out at the Oscar nomination presenters for 'butchering' a number of nominees names, including Irish star Ciaran Hinds.
Sitcom star Leslie Jordan and 'Black-ish' star Tracee Ellis Ross were the hosts of Tuesday’s announcement.
But viewers were left scratching their heads as the pair notably stumbled on a number of names as they read out the highly anticipated nominations for the annual awards.
Belfast star Ciaran Hinds was the first name announced in the Best Supporting Actor category.
However, after the host pronounced his name as ‘Careen’, many took to Twitter to condemn the stars for their lack of preparation before taking to the stage on Tuesday.
One wrote: “It wouldn't bring at least one name... poor Coreen Hends (Ciarán Hinds) and Denny Villnue (Denis Villeneuve).
Virgin Media News correspondent Richard Chambers added: “On Ciaran Hinds... unbelievable that the Oscars, for a limited number of names, can't actually go and get their hosts to learn how to say all the nominees' names properly.”
Sharing a clip of the incident, Irish comedian and impressionist Oliver Callan added: “And now for the latest in #Oscar name-mangling, special Irish edition…”

Another local added: “Careen Hinds. Oh dear.”
But he wasn’t the one name ‘mangled’ at the event, as another angry Twitter user raged: “The contrast between this pretty sophisticated, international set of nominees and a shoddy announcement featuring two Americans who couldn’t be bothered to practice pronouncing “Ciaran Hinds” or “Ryusuke Hamaguchi” or “Denis Villeneuve” was striking. Fix this, Academy!”
Another added: “It's maddening. All those were likely nominees. It is an hour or two's work to run through them.
“I've not yet heard an American pronouncing "Villeneuve" correctly. The pronunciation of "Ciaran" was pretty wild.”
“Really shoddy work,” another wrote.
Ciaran Hinds will go up against The Power Of The Dog's Kodi Smit-McPhee and his co-star Jesse Plemons, Troy Kotsur for Coda, and JK Simmons for Being The Ricardos.
Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley is nominated for best supporting actress for The Lost Daughter alongside Belfast star Dame Judi Dench, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard, and Kirsten Dunst for The Power Of The Dog.
Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical Belfast went on to sweep up multiple nominations across the biggest and most competitive categories, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and the biggest gong of the night, Best Picture.
The black and white film will go up against CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story when the awards come around in March.
Branagh's impressive list of nominations come as a new Oscars record, as he has now received seven nominations in seven different categories over the course of his career.
The previous record of six nominations in six different categories was held by George Clooney and Walt Disney.
There was more joy for Belfast later on in the Best Original Song category as Van Morrison's Down to Joy from the film was announced as a nominee vying for the Academy Award. U2's Your Song Saved My Life from Sing 2 missed out on a place in the shortlist.
But there was disappointment elsewhere, as Belfast’s leading stars Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe, who played Branagh’s parents, missed out on nods for their leading roles.
The 94th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.
This year’s theme is ‘Movie Lovers Unite’.
