Irish star faces ban for 'disgusting' Scarlets incident as citing commissioner steps in amid outrage

Ulster winger Craig Gilroy has been cited over the horrific incident against the Scarlets which saw Ireland v Wales referee Jaco Peyper come in for huge criticism.

During the first half of last Friday’s URC game at Belfast’s Kingspan Stadium, Gilroy put in a shoulder to the head of opposite number Tom Rogers, whose neck rocked back dramatically.

It was a sickening collision, with Wales winger Rogers going on to fail a HIA after leaving the field following treatment.

Peyper, who will take charge of Saturday’s Six Nations opener in Dublin, ruled it was foul play by Irish international Gilroy.

But he decided there was sufficient mitigation to bring the punishment down from a red to a yellow card.

His argument was Rogers’ height was dropping as his jersey was grabbed from behind by another Ulster player.

But it was a call which provoked widespread condemnation on social media with the overwhelming verdict being that a red card should have been issued.

Peyper’s decision was called “disgusting”, “ridiculous”, “terrible”, “crazy”, “scandalous” and “an absolute shocker” amid the plethora of comments.

To rub salt in the wounds, Gilroy went on to score the try that sealed Ulster’s 27-15 victory and a bonus point.

But now he faces further disciplinary action and a potential ban.

He has been cited over the incident, with the match Citing Commissioner making a complaint against him over an act of foul play, namely a dangerous tackle.

Arrangements for the disciplinary process are currently in progress and will be announced in due course.
