Irish Rail bringing back the snack trolley this March

Irish Rail has confirmed that the beloved snack trolley will return on board their trains later this spring.

The snack trolley, compiling mainly of hot beverages and treats, was a staple of the Irish Rail train journey for years. However, it was removed from services at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic due to health and safety concerns.

The welcome news was confirmed at a meeting last night, attended by several Fianna Fail politicians including Senator Ollie Crowe. Mr Crowe said that the service would resume on a phased basis at the end of March, starting with the lengthy Dublin to Cork route.

He told The Hard Shoulder on Newstalk: "We need to make public transport more attractive. I think it's vital we give tourists the best experience possible- it's also the easiest way to promote public transport amongst people who rarely use the train."

He also revealed that Ireland is currently the only country in Western Europe that doesn't provide a catering service on board its trains. A third party will be brought in by Irish Rail to implement the service, at considerable cost.

People welcomed the news online, adding that it would make long commutes across the country more enjoyable. However, others criticised the significant delays in re-introducing the food trolley.

One person wrote on Twitter: "€6 for a can of Bulmers - the good times are back."

Another Twitter user commented: "About bloody time. Disgusting management of the service."
