The Irish passport will be getting a major makeover for the first time in a decade - and the public will get to weigh in on design choices.
Tanaiste Micheal Martin will today inform Ministers of plans for a public engagement process to create a new design for the passports.
However, the new design theme has already been confirmed - the Department of Foreign Affairs design team is currently considering themes which are understood to be “anchored in Ireland’s natural environment”, the Irish Times reports.
A public consultation in the form of online questionnaire will be available from tomorrow, asking citizens which Irish flora and fauna should be included in the design will take place through a short online questionnaire.

The project is set to begin later this year and will take some time as it is expected that the new passport will be available before the end of 2025. The current passport is 10 years old and the International Civil Aviation Authority recommends documents undergo revamps frequently to include the latest security features.
The passport change is also meant to “continue to communicate Irish culture and values". However, despite the makeover, the core elements of the passport are set to remain the same, with a gold Irish harp on the burgundy background.
