Irish passengers urged to check passport renewal date as month-long delays reported

Irish passport holders are being urged to check the renewal date on their passports as waiting times of up to a month are being reported.

Parents with young children are being told that they should renew their passports if needed before making any holiday plans.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said that over the last three months there had been record passport applications.

Over the course of 2022, Minister Coveney estimates that 1.7 million applications will be made.

Depending on the type of passport application, it can take over a month to get your hands on a new passport.

The quickest way by far to get a new passport is to do it online with a simple adult renewal. Current waiting times for that are 10 days.

However, it is possible to get a passport in as few as three days if you follow these steps.

Other methods for getting a passport renewed have considerably longer waiting times.

For a complex child renewal online it can take up to 15 working days.

First-time passport applications done online can take up to 35 working days.

However the longest by far is if you choose to renew your passport through the passport express service which can take up to eight weeks.

The current price for a standard 10-year passport book is €75 with the larger 66-page costing €105.

A five-year passport for a child is €20 and the larger 66-page costs €50.

You could also choose to buy a passport card that has a 5-year lifespan for €35 but it can only be used for travel in the EU.
