Irish Lotto winner plays devious trick on family as get-together takes insane twist

There were celebrations in National Lottery HQ today as three separate winners travelled to collect their whopping prizes.

The players claimed a combined €963,978 in winnings through Lotto, EuroMillions and scratch card games.

First through the door was a Wexford man who scooped a life-changing €418,978 after matching 5 numbers and the bonus in the June 7 Lotto draw.

The player, who wants to keep his win private, bought the lucky ticket through the National Lottery app.

He laughed as he told how he played a devious trick on his family during a get-together lunch he organised.

The man said: “I found out the night of the draw. I checked the app and saw all these numbers flash up on my phone, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I didn’t tell anyone at first, I needed a bit of time to process it myself and believe it or not, I went to bed that night and had the best sleep of my life!

“The next morning, I organised a family get-together over lunch and I thought I’d have a bit of fun with them, so I said I’d won €418 in the Lotto. They were happy out and congratulated me, but then I interrupted their celebrations to say, sorry did I say €418? I meant to say €418,000!!”

Also claiming a substantial win today was a Tipperary man who won €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus draw on June 13.

The winning quick pick ticket was purchased at Centra in Old Bridge, Clonmel.

The player bought their ticket the night of the draw and didn’t check until the following morning. He said: “I never check my tickets the night of the draw, because if I did win something, I wouldn’t be able to get a wink of sleep that night. I checked the following morning and nearly took weak! I told my partner who stored it away safely in the cupboard beside our passports –which we also plan to be using a lot more soon!”

His partner laughed: “I’m going to hit Grafton Street to buy myself something nice."

A trip to Switzerland and New York City are just two of the top destinations this couple hope to travel to first following their big win. ‌

A second winner from Tipperary also travelled to Dublin today to collect a cheque worth a handsome €45,000 which they won on a scratch card.

The player won the Top Prize on the Fire 4’s Ice 5’s scratch card purchased at Top Oil Service Station in Cahir.

A holiday to Greece, a new car and some home improvements are just some of the plans the winner has with their new-found prize money.

It comes as Ireland eagerly awaits the draw for tonight's staggering €12.5 million (estimated) Lotto jackpot - the biggest jackpot on offer so far this year.

As we get closer to the draw, the National Lottery are reminding players that the cut-off time for ticket sales is 7.45pm on Wednesday evening and tickets can be purchased in-store, through the National Lottery app or on their website.
