DUBLIN — On Saturday, November 25, Irish southpaw Gary Cully, making his third ring appearance of the year, got back on track against British fighter Reece Mould at 3Arena in Dublin. The bout between the two was on the card topped by Chantelle Cameron against Katie Taylor.
The WBA Continental European lightweight title went the total 10 rounds. Judge Pawel Kardyni ultimately scored the fight 97-93 in Mould’s favor, while judges Paul McCullagh and Jan Christensen gave Cully scores of 96-93 and 97-93, respectively.
Cully (17-1, 10 KOs) rebounded from his first career defeat to Jose Felix via third-round TKO at the same location in May.
Cully, 27, from Ireland, who trains under Joe McNally at the Rotunda ABC in Liverpool, fought in the ring for the third time this year.
In June, Reece Mould (18-2, 6 KOs) emerged victorious over Christian Lopez Flores via scorecard. The 29-year-old defeated Hamed Ghaz with a unanimous decision in February.
Mould from England got his five-win streak snapped competing for the first time outside of the United Kingdom.
“There are bigger and better things to come for the 27-year-old,” said Eddie Hearn a British sports promoter.
“I’m back baby,” said Curly in media reports.
Cully scored some solid head shots in the fifth and Mould kept up his strong body effort in a highly competitive round. In the sixth round of the fight, Gary Cully was able to maintain distance and control over the opponent as he frequently connected on outside blows.
Cully landed a few of rapid one-two combinations in the tenth and final round of the fight, but Mould persisted in pushing and applying pressure.
In the last moment of the championship round, Reece Mould managed to nail two spectacular overhand rights. You could feel the suspense in the air at the sold-out 3Arena as the fight was a close, technical fight that would go to the judge’s scorecards.
Cully was given another opportunity at a homecoming competition, and he won this time. His victory fulfilled a long-held desire, and after he is finished celebrating, he and his team may decide what Cully’s next move in the lightweight class will be.
