Irish Lidl store forced to close early as gardai and bomb squad called to street

A Lidl supermarket was forced to close early on Monday night after gardai and the army bomb squad were called to the street.

The shop in Athlone shut its doors around 8pm today as a result of the incident on the Dublin road.

Gardai and the bomb squad rushed to the scene after a number of suspicious devices were found in the Athlone Business Park.

The devices were deemed not viable and were brought away for further examination.

Lidl said in a statement: "We are sorry to inform you but due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to close our Athlone store early this evening, Monday 14th of February. We will open as normal tomorrow at 8am. Apologies for any inconvenience caused."
