Irish League star suspended after picture appears to show him in 'pro-IRA' shirt

Irish League player John Herron has been suspended with immediate effect.

Images circulated online on Sunday evening of the former Celtic star apparently wearing a 'pro-IRA' t-shirt.

It is believed the image was taken at the Féile an Phobail event in West Belfast where the Wolfe Tones were playing last night.

Herron, who joined Larne in 2020 and has also played for Blackpool, Raith Rovers and Glentoran, was pictured alongside Cliftonville player Ronan Hale, with Herron appearing to wear a t-shirt emblazoned with the caption: “Tiocfaidh ár lá, sing up the Ra, ooh ah up the Ra.”

This morning his club Larne responded and banned the Scottish midfielder from all fixtures with the club.

"Following the circulation of an image online yesterday evening (Sunday), Larne Football Club can confirm John Herron has been suspended with immediate effect," read the club statement.

"For the period of his suspension, John will not represent the club in fixtures at any level. An investigation into this incident is now underway.

"We have shown that we are an inclusive football club for all, demonstrated not only in words but also by our extensive work in the local community. There is no room for behaviour which falls outside of this ethos and we fully expect members, players and anyone associated with the club to reflect these standards at all times.

"We will be making no further comment until the investigation has been completed."

Herron represented Scotland at all underage levels but has not featured for the senior international team.
