Irish League fans react to latest sub-regional stadia funding blow

Irish League fans have unanimously hit out following news that the £36m sub-regional stadia funding plan is under threat.

It was reported on Monday that the programme had been shelved due to the Northern Ireland Executive collapsing.

However, on Tuesday Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey insisted the funding was "ready to go", but reiterated it required sign-off from the Executive which collapsed earlier in February when Paul Givan resigned as First Minister.

The impasse and doubt over the funding has led to grave concerns within Northern Ireland's football family.

NI Football League chief executive Gerard Lawlor accused Stormont of “slapping football in the face”, while Irish FA counterpart Patrick Nelson said the IFA had "expressed concern" on the lack of engagement from the Communities Minister on the funding programme.

Irish League supporters vented their own frustration and concerns on social media

Coleraine fan Bryan said: "It’s a massive kick in the teeth for the thousands of volunteers up and down the country who give up a lot of their valuable time to keep clubs afloat. They have been there through thick and thin despite some tough times."

KitchyGFC added: "Football is a game that brings people from all sorts of backgrounds together. One of the best things in NI for that. It desperately needs funding to bring the facilities up to date and make them family friendly."

David simply said: "Failure. Failure. Failure."

John tweeted: "Unbelievable but hardly surprising given that both sides are now just going tit for tat with each other, remember when they come to Ur door for their election, tell them where to go ,where the sun doesn't shine."

Irish Football Blog said: "Massively disappointing, but as everyone will say hear it’s hardly surprising. Think the only sustainable solution that clubs on both sides of the border can rely on is their own bottom up initiatives. Slower, more gradual, but more likely to actually come to fruition."

Craig hit out: "Absolute shambles, they need to stop using our game, our communities, and our weekly escape from everyday life as some sort of political leverage and give the clubs what they need to bring stadiums up to modern standards!"

Barry added: "Political football in every sense."

Meanwhile, Iain tweeted: "So many people regardless of creed, political opinion, age or gender have been screwed over on this. The impact on people would have been far reaching."

Graeme labelled the announcement as a "dereliction of duty", adding: "This funding was agreed years ago."

Simon called it "depressingly predictable" while Ross said: "As with most things to do with the Assembly, it's a bit of a shambles."

The anger continued on Facebook, with Alan saying: "Total and absolute shame and disgrace."

Alan said: "Absolute disgrace. Political posturing and posing for the cameras for the last few years. Paying lip service to those involved in the local game. Hard working people, volunteers who give their time and effort to improve a sporting product that not only gives pleasure to thousands of men, women and children on a weekly basis from across the community, but has also grown into a product that has attracted interest from further afield."

Rodney added: "Political point scoring and inflated egos, all at our expense... voters are shafted yet again by those we put into power, and every day they abuse that power given to them."

Paula said: "Absolutely disgusted. No reason for the delay at all."

Meanwhile, Robin said - with a hint of sarcasm: "Just another debacle that sums up the fiasco of power sharing! That said patience is a virtue and we should give Stormont more time, to be fair it's only been 10 years or so waiting on the funding."

And John said: "And these are the people that will come to your door and promise you the earth come election time."
