As the New Year kicks off, many people across Ireland will set ambitious goals to try and improve their lifestyle.
One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to get fit and healthy, meaning lots of people will be considering joining a gym.
Going to a gym for the first time can be a daunting experience for a number of reasons, whether it be fearing what others will think of your abilities, or not knowing how to use the equipment.

With this in mind, one regular gym user has issued some advice for anyone in Ireland embarking on a new fitness journey.
Posting on Reddit Ireland, they said: “Joining a gym can be a pretty daunting experience for someone who has never been or hasn't been in a while. As a regular gym user these are some tips that might help you out a little bit.”
They went on to issue six tips for beginners wanting to join a gym.
“1. Choosing the right gym. There are a few different types of gym environments. Check out a few gyms at the times you would consider going. The wrong atmosphere, music, crowd, can put you off going entirely. Some people want a fitness club with a pool, sauna and steam room. Some people just want a place with weights and some cardio equipment. Choosing the right gym will be the number 1 reason to consistently go
“2. Take your time to figure out machines, weights, cardio equipment, even the changing room and showers. If you don't know, ask someone at the desk. They are usually bored out of their mind so are happy to help and show off their knowledge. It builds rapport and at least it is one friendly face when you come into the gym.
“3. There is really no right or wrong thing to wear in a gym. Except jeans. Never wear jeans. Just have clothes that don't stink.
“4. The regulars will spot a new person but they won't pay a blind bit of notice to what you do. They are too occupied with themselves. Unless you are doing something to cause a scene you will only get the occasional glance. There is a lot of down time in between sets and exercises so people look around, eyes wander, but most usually pick up their phone and ignore what's going on around them.
“5. Wipe down machines before and after use. Just a quick wipe with a small hand towel will do the trick but if you can find a spray bottle even better.
“6. Don't be a creep. Don't hit on people. Don't stare. There are mirrors everywhere so you can easily get caught looking for too long. Turn the flash off if you want to take a picture of yourself and try to avoid having others in the photo. That's just good manners.”
They concluded the post by writing: “Have fun and remember most people are good people who will help you out.”
Reddit users took to the comments to praise the helpful advice in the post.
One person said: “Good idea for a post. I think it is daunting for anybody to do. I've been gyming for a few months and I'm still really self conscious.”
