Irish FA respond to criticism over Irish Cup semi-final kick-off time

The Irish FA has responded to criticism over the early kick-off time for next month's Irish Cup semi-final between Crusaders and Dungannon Swifts.

The two sides are due to meet on Saturday, April 1, with the BBC live streaming all the action from Mourneview Park.

The game is scheduled for a 12.15pm kick-off, which has drawn hefty criticism from fans who say it will clash with youth and junior football commitments early in the day.

The Irish FA say the 12.15pm timing is down to "broadcasting rules", which it is understood fall under UEFA's Article 48.

The association added that both clubs had been consulted on the arrangements.

The IFA said in a statement: “The Samuel Gelston’s Whiskey Irish Cup semi-final tie between Dungannon Swifts and Crusaders is being streamed live by the BBC.

“Under broadcasting rules, it cannot be played at 3pm so, after consultation with both clubs and all parties involved, a 12.15pm kick-off was the preferred option rather than a late afternoon start.”

A number of fans have criticised the early kick-off, with many stating it will clash with other levels of football in the morning.

Some suggested that Ulster Rugby's clash with Leinster at 5.30pm that day had impacted on BBC's scheduling.

One supporter said: "Why that time is beyond me."

Another added: "Must be an April Fool's prank ffs. Terrible time."

One fan called for a later kick-0ff: "Get that changed to a late kick off, kids football + Man City vs Liverpool on the early kick off that day."

Another said: "The IFA doing their best to minimise what should be a showpiece occasion for fans and players!"

Keith said: "Great venue but absolutely shocking for fans with family playing sports on Saturday morning , ridiculous."
