Irish Eurovision fans among those all making the same joke after the UK almost won

Ukraine won this year’s Eurovision song contest with an enormous 631 points after a landslide public vote.

The public rallied behind the Kalush Orchestra in a symbolic show of public support following the country's invasion by Russia.

Sam Ryder came second for the UK, in what was the country's best result in over 20 years.

It has left many Eurovision fans making the same joke online.

In 2016 the UK voted to leave the European Union, becoming the only country to ever do so, and officially withdrew in 2020.

However, the country remains eligible to participate in the Eurovision as the BBC is a member of the European Broadcasting Union.

Some other non-EU countries also compete in the annual contest, including Russia, Israel and Australia.

This hasn’t stopped Eurovision fans from making the same joke online, after the UK received its highest result in over 20 years and almost won.

“Is this some Europe wide joke to make post-Brexit UK host Eurovision?!” one person asked on Twitter.

Another said: “Does anyone else think the rest of Europe are setting the UK up so that the people that brought us brexit have to spend a fortune next year to host Eurovision?”

A third wrote: “Ahhh Eurovision I see it now, if the UK win then they will need to host the comp in the UK and welcome Europe in. Big slap in the face for Brexit.”

Someone else joked: “ok but can you imagine the hilarity of the UK, post brexit UK, having to host EUROVISION, an event mostly about EUROPEAN UNITY.”

“Is this Brexit revenge…?” another asked.

Despite the jokes, Sam Ryder’s stellar performance of Space Man has received widespread praise.

He topped the jury vote and ultimately just missed out on winning the title after the public vote went to Ukraine.

It marks a major improvement on the UK’s performance last year’s when James Newman received zero points in 2021 with his song My Last Breath.

Ireland’s Brooke Scullion failed to qualify after her performance of That’s Rich in Thursday’s second semi-final, in what came as a surprise to many viewers.
