A Derry-born designer has revealed that they worked with Rihanna on her Super Bowl look for her first live performance in seven years.
The Barbadian singer, who during last night's show also dropped the bombshell that she was pregnant for a second time, came out to fans wearing a “flight-inspired” look designed exclusively by the Spanish fashion house Loewe.
The outfit by Loewe, which Rihanna wore while suspended in the air during her performance, involved a bright red jumpsuit and a matching red breastplate, worn over her pregnancy bump.
Irish connection
The look has a surprising Irish connection, however, with the fashion house being helmed by Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson since 2013. According to the company’s website since taking on the role of creative director he has “spearheaded a major rejuvenation of the house.”
The Instagram page for Loewe revealed that the look was put together by them in a post, which said "Loewe designs a flight-inspired look for @badgalriri’s much-anticipated performance at the #SuperBowl halftime show."
A quote from creative director Anderson underneath says: "I’m so excited to have been part of this unforgettable moment. Rihanna is a true icon, and working with her to bring these stage looks to life feels like a wild, wonderful dream."
Who is Jonathan Anderson?
Originally born in Derry, the designer studied at the London College of Fashion and has had a successful career to date. He has won a multitude of awards for his work, including making a historic double win in the Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year category in 2015 at the British Fashion Awards.
He launched his first menswear collection as part of his JW Anderson label which he established in 2008. The label quickly became a success, gaining the attention of the fashion community, with the label taking part in London Fashion Week 2008. The subsequent success saw Anderson create a women’s capsule collection in 2010.
