Irish community in shock after popular GAA player and dad-of-one dies suddenly in the US

Tributes are being paid to an "exceptionally talented" Irishman who died suddenly in the United States over the weekend.

Paddy Branagan, originally from Graiguecullen on the Laois/Carlow border, passed away on Sunday in Alabama.

The 30-year-old was the "adored father" of a young boy and a skilful GAA player who had represented his local club and Co Laois at minor and U21 levels.

Efforts are now under way to bring Paddy's body back to Ireland.

The local community is said to be in shock following his death, with the young man remembered as "very funny", "loveable" and a "good friend".

Graiguecullen GAA led tributes, writing: "We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of one of our own Paddy Branagan.

"Paddy was a part of the 2010 minor and u21 winning teams. He went on to represent our club with great pride in the intervening years and was an exceptional talent on the field representing both Graiguecullen and Laois.

"Everyone at Graiguecullen GAA sends our condolences to Mary, Lorraine, Peter, Mary Claire, Thomas, Seamie, Sarah, Sonny, Shannon and the extended Branagan family at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Friends and members of his local community in Carlow and Laois have also been paying tribute to Paddy.

One friend said: "RIP Paddy. Great memories were made back in the day! A good friend for as long as I can remember. Condolences to all of the Branagan family, Shannon and Sonny. My thoughts are with all of you at this sad time. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis."

A second wrote: "Gonna miss cutting up and laughing with you my Irish friend. God please be with the family."

Someone else said: "Thinking of all the Branagan family and friends at this very sad time, Paddy was a very funny, loveable young man, Rest in peace Paddy."

A second person wrote: "Such terrible news, great footballer and a great lad. Rest in peace Paddy, condolences to all the Branagan family."

A third commented: "So so sorry for yer loss such a gentleman he will be missed my thoughts and prayers are with ye all."

While another added: "One of a kind Paddy was! He will be sorely missed by all."

Paddy's funeral details will be announced later.

His death notice reads: "15 St Fiacc’s Terrace, Graiguecullen, Carlow, passed away unexpectedly, in Alabama, US, on May 15th, 2022.

"Adored father of Sonny, beloved son of Mary and the late Seamus, cherished brother of Lorraine, Peter, Mary Claire, Thomas, Seamie and Sarah and sadly missed by Sonny’s mother Shannon.

"May Paddy Rest In Peace. Funeral arrangements to follow shortly."
