Irish community in mourning as man killed in Tipperary house fire named locally

A local community in Co Tipperary is in mourning after the death of a man in a house fire over the weekend.

The man, named locally as John Scott, passed away after the incident in Ballingarry, near Thurles, on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene where they discovered a bungalow on fire outside the village.

The 47-year-old, who is understood to have seven children, was found dead after the blaze was extinguished.

Mr Scott was well known in the local area and he is mourned by his partner, family and friends.

The couple had four children together and three kids each from previous relationships, Tipperary Live reports.

The secretary of local club Mullinahone FC extended her condolences on Monday following Mr Scott's tragic death.

She said: "Mullinahone FC have learnt of the tragic and untimely death of John Scott Ballingarry.

"John comes from a huge family many of whom reside in our village and the surrounding area.

"His passing will have touched many homes and to you all we offer our deepest sympathies, his children are especially in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

Gardai have launched an investigation into the blaze but it is believed they are not treating the fire as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination was due to take place on Monday, with Mr Scott's funeral details yet to be announced.

A Garda spokesperson said on Sunday: "Gardai are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a person following a house fire in Ballingarry South, Thurles today, Sunday 20th February 2022.

“At approximately 11am, Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to a house fire at a property in Ballingarry South, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

"The body of a man in his 40s was discovered inside the property and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His body has since been removed to Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

“Investigating Gardaí have preserved the scene to allow a technical examination to take place.”

"Enquiries are ongoing."
