Irish amateur Alex Maguire has narrowly missed out on a spot at the 2022 Open Championship after losing his semi-final at the Amateur Championship.
Maguire was hoping to replicate the feat of James Sugrue who won the event in 2019 but fell agonisingly short of winning the premiere Amateur tournament.
The Laytown-Bettystown man came up against South African Aldrich Potgieter but ultimately lost the match 3&1.
It was a disastrous start for Maguire who who found himself three down after six holes but continued to battle hard.
And Maguire closed the gap to just one by the 11th hole and despite losing the 12th, cut the gap back to one again.
But a bogey on 15 left Maguire with it all to do and ultimately lost on the 17th hole.
South African Potgieter will now face Sam Bairstow in the final and the winner can join some elite company such as Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal
