Irish activist faces criminal damage charges after protest outside prison

A Cork woman is facing criminal damage charges following a protest outside a Liverpool prison.

Just Stop Oil activist Orla Murphy, 21, was arrested at HMP Altcourse on Friday after paint was thrown on signage at the prison.

Louis McKechnie awaits trial at the jail after five people stormed the track at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone in July to demand that the government stop new oil and gas projects.

Merseyside Police said: “We have charged a 21 year-old woman with criminal damage.

“Orla Murphy was charged in connection with an incident at HM Prison Altcourse on Friday 7th October.

“She appeared at Liverpool magistrates court on Monday 10th October.”

Orla, who currently lives in Glasgow, pleaded not guilty to the charge and a trial date was set for January 4, 2023.
