Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of brutal conditions and 'damaging gusts' as Status Yellow warning issued

It will be a stormy, wet day today with very strong winds as a Status Yellow warning was issued for the entire country.

Met Eireann warned of widespread gales and "damaging gusts" of wind as the alert remains in place all day from 4am to 9pm on Wednesday.

Heavy rain is forecast to sweep eastwards across the country Wednesday morning, which could lead to spot flooding in places and thunderstorms.

The rain is expected to clear in the east of the country by the afternoon with sunny spells - but could be followed again by heavy or thundery rain or hail showers.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Very windy on Wednesday with widespread gales: southerly veering westerly. Some severe and damaging gusts may occur.

"Potential for localised wave overtopping along Atlantic coasts. A spell of heavy rain will occur, leading to flooding in places."

Meanwhile, the UK’s Met Office has also issued a Status Yellow wind and alert in counties Antrim and Down with a separate Status Yellow rain warning for Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry. The spokesman said: “Heavy rain may cause travel disruption and, in a few places, flooding."

There is also a Status Orange marine warning for stormy conditions along the west coast of Ireland from Mizen Head in Cork to Slyne Head in Galway to Malin Head in Donegal and on the north Irish Sea.

Winds on Irish waters will reach storm force 10 at times between 6am and 11pm on Wednesday.

It will remain windy overnight with some scattered heavy showers with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.

We are also in for a wet day on Thursday as scattered outbreaks of thundery rain will move across the country with local hail and lightning and "gusty cyclonic" variable winds.

The rain will clear overnight on Thursday and it will be a mostly dry day on Friday, with some isolated showers and good sunshine.
