Ireland weather: Met Eireann's five-day forecast shows 'low pressure' week of thunderstorms and more

Met Eireann’s forecast for the week ahead is nothing short of miserable, with heavy rain and potentially thundery downpours affecting many counties.

The overview for the next five days states that: “Low pressure will never be too far from us in the coming week, keeping our weather unsettled.

“There will be spells of rain and showers, some of which will be heavy, with breezy conditions at times also”.

Despite this, temperatures will continue to be mild with lows of 5C and highs of 14C.

Here’s Met Eireann’s forecast for the week ahead:

Monday

Monday will be a dull and damp day with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle across the country. The rain will be most persistent over Ulster in the morning. During the afternoon and evening, more persistent rain will push into the west and south with occasional heavy falls possible. Highest temperatures 11 to 14 degrees, possibly reaching 15 degrees, in moderate southerly winds.

Outbreaks of rain will clear to the north early on Monday night, followed quickly from the southwest by further showery rain. Some of the showers will be heavy or possibly thundery. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in a light to moderate southerly breeze.

Tuesday

Tuesday will start off with a mix of scattered showers and sunny spells. Cloud will thicken from the southwest as the day goes on with rain gradually spreading northeastwards across the country. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate southwesterly winds.

A wet night with widespread rain, turning heavy in places. Becoming blustery as southwesterly winds increase fresh, strong at times on Atlantic coasts. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

Wednesday

Rain will clear to the north on Wednesday morning. Sunny spells and showers will follow for the rest of the day, with some prolonged showers over the northern half of the country. Remaining breezy in moderate to fresh westerly winds. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.

A good deal of dry weather overall, with well scattered showers and clear spells. A cold night with lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees in light winds.

Thursday

Widespread showers will develop on Thursday, with some possibly turning heavy. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.

Friday
