Ireland weather: Met Eireann predicts 'thunderstorm' conditons alongside 18C heat before big change

Met Eireann has forecast some thundery conditions as temperatures hit 18C in some areas.

Rain is due to feature mildly throughout the rest of the week, but sunny spells will be well scattered also ahead of a big change next week.

As for today, it's due to be mostly cloudy this morning with scattered patches of light rain and drizzle - which will extend across the country during the afternoon and evening.

There will be "sunny intervals developing" too as the day goes on and it will be warm and humid with highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Tonight will be dry at first but a band of persistent rain will push down from the northwest - however parts of the south and east will stay dry until morning.

Friday will feature a wet start to the day as rain - which will be heavy in places - arrives with some thundery downpours possible, gradually clearing southeastwards later in the afternoon.

Sunny spells and well-scattered showers are expected from later in the morning in the northwest.

Highest temperatures will range from 14 to 17 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds, gradually veering northwesterly behind the rain.

Friday night will be mostly dry with long clear spells and “just the odd stray shower,” according to the Irish forecaster.

Leading into Saturday, mist, and fog will clear from most areas in the morning though light variable breezes will allow some coastal fog to persist through the day.

It’s due to be a largely dry day but will become cloudy from the west through the morning with a few patches of light rain and drizzle and highs of 18 degrees.

Saturday night will remain mostly dry overnight with just a few patches of light rain or drizzle.

As we head towards morning, a band of rain will move into parts of Connacht.

Then, there will be a good deal of cloud at first on Sunday morning with outbreaks of rain tracking eastwards across the country, becoming patchier as it does so.

Sunny spells will follow through the morning and afternoon as good dry intervals develop.

As we head into a new week, Monday will be mild and humid with patchy outbreaks of light rain and drizzle.

There will be a good deal of cloud too but some sunny spells will break through at times.

Highest temperatures will continue to range from 14 to 18 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Towards the evening, outbreaks of showery rain will move in from the Atlantic, extending northeastwards, becoming patchier as it does so.

As for the rest of next week, conditions are due to be uncertain as a band of low-pressure moves across Ireland, and the forecaster says: "there is some uncertainty in the details further out but it will be generally mild with spells of rain at times.”
