Ireland weather: Met Eireann pinpoints exact time and location for snow as shock cold blast forecast

Ireland is set for a shock blast of cold weather marking a significant change from the above average temperatures the country enjoyed over recent days.

Many people will already notice a chill in the air as a cold front pushes down from Scandinavia.

The coming days will see daytime temperatures struggle to reach double figures, however a bitter windchill could make it feel as cold as -6C in parts.

Nights will see widespread frosts and subzero temperatures, with snow even forecast to fall in some areas.

In its latest forecast, Met Eireann pinpointed exactly when and where snow could fall.

Wednesday night

Met Eireann said: “Cold and frosty on Wednesday with mostly clear skies.

“There will be a few wintry showers, chiefly affecting northern and eastern coastal areas. Showers of rain, hail or sleet, with snow possible on high ground.

“Lowest temperatures of -3C to 0C in moderate northeast breezes.”

Snow: Expected in northern and eastern coastal areas on Wednesday night

Thursday

The National Forecaster said: “A cold, bright and frosty start on Thursday. There will be good spells of spring sunshine during the day but it will feel noticeably chilly in a brisk northeasterly breeze.

“Well scattered showers of rain, hail and sleet are expected, mainly affecting eastern coastal counties with a possibility of some snow on high ground.

“Highest temperatures of 5C to 9C, coldest in the north, in a fresh northeast wind.”

Snow: Mostly affecting Eastern coastal counties during the day on Thursday

Thursday night

“There will be a few showers in coastal areas of the north and east and some may be of a wintry nature, but most of the country will be dry with long clear spells on Thursday night.

“A widespread frost is expected with temperatures falling back to between -3C to 1C in light northerly breezes.”

Snow: Could fall in north and east coastal areas on Thursday night

Friday

Met Eireann said: “After a cold and frosty start, Friday looks set to be a dry day for most of the country with the best of the bright spells in the south, however while it will start mostly bright and sunny across the country, cloud will increase from the north through the day with outbreaks of rain extending into the north and northeast during the afternoon and evening hours. Highest temperatures of 7C to 9C, but temperature will fall though the afternoon in Ulster, in moderate northerly winds.

“Outbreaks of rain will extend along eastern fringes on Friday night and may turn to sleet at times over higher ground. Showery outbreaks of rain will also develop along western and northern Atlantic coasts as the night goes on.

“Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4, coldest in Munster where under clearer skies there may be a touch of frost locally, while cloud cover should keep temperatures milder elsewhere, in moderate northwest winds.”

Snow: Rain could turn to sleet over higher ground in eastern areas on Friday night.

Weekend

The forecast reads: “Rather cloudy on Saturday with widespread showers mixed with sunny spells, the best of the sunny spells will be across Ulster in the afternoon and evening. Highest afternoon temperatures 7C to 10C in moderate northwest breezes.

“Showers will become isolated on Saturday night as most of the country becomes dry with clear spells. Frost will form in parts the southeast where it will be coldest with lowest temperatures of -2C to 4C.

“Outbreaks of rain will develop across the west and north of the country towards dawn on Sunday before clearing away to the south with drier and somewhat brighter weather developing for the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 8C to 10C.

“Becoming cloudier overnight with rain extending into the north and east towards morning. Lows of 1C to 5C but becoming milder later in the night.”

Snow: None expected

Looking ahead to next week, Met Eireann said: “While there is more uncertainty for conditions next week, early indications suggest that rain in the north and east on Monday morning will gradually clear to a showery northwest flow that will be maintained through the middle of the week, however overall, rainfall amounts look to remain quite low.

“Temperatures will rebound a little closer to normal with highs of 8C to 12C generally, getting a bit milder at times in the south.”
