Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast for 19-hour period where snow and more hazards will hit

Met Eireann has put a 19-hour rain warning into effect for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford as hazardous conditions approach.

The alert is in place from 11pm this evening until 6pm on Wednesday with the forecaster warning of “heavy falls of rain, falling as sleet or snow in places for a time, with localised flooding and poor driving conditions.”

There is also a wind warning in place for all of Munster and Donegal, which will be in effect from 10pm tonight until 12pm on Wednesday.

Irish meteorologists are advising people living in these regions to prepare for “very strong and gusty south to southeast winds,” as the country prepares to be battered once again.

As for the rest of the day today, there will be plenty of sunshine alongside showers into the evening with “thunderstorms and hail, especially over the northern half of Ireland”.

Localised flooding and poor driving conditions are also expected due to heavy showers.

Wednesday morning will be wet and windy with persistent or heavy rain expected in all areas as well as localised flooding along with strong, gusty southeasterly winds.

The rain will be heaviest over the southern half of the country and will fall as sleet in some areas, with snow possible on high ground.

Through the afternoon and evening brighter weather will follow from the west and winds will ease.

Thursday is then "likely to be one of the brighter days this week," with most areas seeing dry and sunny spells, but there will still be a chance of strong southerly winds developing later while highest temperatures are due to range from 7 to 9 or 10 degrees.

The last of the overnight rain will clear from the east early in the morning on Friday to leave a day of sunny spells and showers.

The showers will be heavy or thundery with the possibility of hail, but temperatures will remain mild between 9 and 12 degrees, in light to moderate southerly breezes.

A full forecast for the weekend ahead has yet to be confirmed but at this point, forecasters say: “Continuing very unsettled with further wet and windy spells expected.”
