Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast cold snap to blast the country as one location to see the worst of snow conditions

Ireland is set for a cold and wintry end to the week as a freezing air mass moves in from the north.

Met Eireann has predicted that rain, hail, sleet and snow on high ground are likely as temperatures plummet to subzero temperatures.

The northern half of the country will see the worst of the conditions, with snow showers expected in some areas. However, spells of sunshine will break through.

Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, in light to moderate northerly winds.

On Friday night, outbreaks of rain will affect east and northeast counties and may turn to sleet at times over higher ground, becoming more widespread towards morning.

Lowest temperatures of zero to plus 2 degrees, coldest in Munster where there may be a touch of frost locally under clearer skies, while cloud cover should keep temperatures higher elsewhere.

Highest afternoon temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light northerly breezes.

Showers will become isolated on Saturday night as most of the country becomes dry with clear spells.
