Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast bitter turn in weather just hours away and give snow update

The weather is set to take a freezing turn in the next few days as temperatures dip as low as -3C on Monday night.

An unsettled weekend will quickly turn to chilly weather although there is no sign of snow accompanying it at the moment.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tomorrow morning there will be sunny spells in the northwest but further outbreaks of rain will move up across the rest of the country from the south. The rain will gradually clear eastwards during the afternoon and will be followed by sunny spells and isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, veering westerly as the rain clears.

"Cold, dry and calm as high pressure builds over the country. There will be frost and icy patches as temperatures fall to between -3 and 0 degrees."

And the nights for the rest of the week are looking similarly cold with 2C Tuesday, 1C on Wednesday and back to -2C again on Thursday.

In the immediate future, the forecaster is predicting a dry start to Sunday in most places but it will turn wet in the afternoon.

The forecaster added: "Mostly cloudy at first with patches of light rain and drizzle. During the morning and afternoon, some bright or sunny periods will develop as the rain and drizzle slowly clears eastwards. However, later this afternoon further outbreaks of rain will develop in the west and will spread across the western half of the country this evening. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, increasing fresh to strong this afternoon.

"The outbreaks of rain will extend across the rest of the country early tonight. Drier conditions with clear spells and well scattered showers will move into the west and northwest overnight as the rain moves eastwards. It will be quite windy early in the night with fresh to strong southerly winds but winds will ease light to moderate by morning. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees."
