Ireland weather: Heavy showers, thunderstorms and strong winds all on cards for weekend

Only a short few days into July, Ireland has been hit with some generally awful weather with two weather warnings having been put in place since the beginning of the month.

This weekend isn’t set to bring any change in the weather for those hoping to get out and enjoy some sun, for the most part, it is heavy showers, thunderstorms and strong winds. Although Saturday night will be, mostly, dry.

Unfortunately for the week ahead, Met Éireann is forecasting that the heavy rain is set to continue up until Wednesday at the earliest.

Here is Met Éireann’s forecast for the weekend:

Friday

It is a rather cloudy start this morning with some heavy showers, mainly in the west.

Sunny spells will develop mixed with well-scattered showers for the afternoon, with the chance of isolated thunderstorms. Showers will become confined to the northwest, for a dry and sunny evening elsewhere. Warm, humid and very breezy today with highs of 19C to 23C in fresh and gusty southerly winds.

Any lingering showers will die out early tonight becoming dry and clear for a time. Overnight, heavy showery rain will develop in the southwest along with strong winds. Southeasterly winds will be moderate to fresh elsewhere. Overnight temperatures of 13C to 16C.

Saturday

It will be windy tomorrow with strong southerly winds developing in all areas, very windy at times along the south and west coast.

Showery rain in the south in the morning will move northwards across the country during the day. Rain may be heavy in parts. Winds will moderate later in the afternoon as the rain clears to sunny spells with just one or two showers following. Highest temperatures of 17C to 21C.

Saturday night will be largely dry and clear with winds easing to a light southerly breeze. Later in the night, heavy showers will move up into the south. Cooler than previous nights with lows of 9 to 11C.

Sunday

Sunday morning will be bright with a few showers in places. Showers will become widespread and increasingly heavy in the afternoon and evening, with thunderstorms likely in parts.

Winds will be mostly light, although gusty at times due to showers. Highs of 17C to 21C. Showers will clear early Sunday night, however, rain will later develop in the south and west. Lows of 10C to 13C.
