Ireland weather: Curtain trick will keep you cool sleeping during humid and sticky nights

The Irish climate doesn't usually provide hot humid sleepless nights, however extended bouts of high pressure this summer are causing people to stir late into the night.

Finding comfort in bed and getting your seven hours of sleep is a tricky affair in hot humid conditions, RSVP Live reports.

There are a number of hacks you can employ to get a good nights rest, with one lesser-known tactic involving your curtains.

Expert Catherine Grayson from A-Plan Insurance has told of her top tips on keeping cool this summer, while saving on energy bills.

Build energy credit by minimising usage

Catherine said: "It makes sense to lower your energy usage as much as possible in the summer, to build up credit towards your winter bills."

Here are some tips to help mitigate your spending:

  • Analyse your meter daily - these can be taken at the end of the day to track your daily usage, enabling you to pinpoint where you are using the most electricity.

  • Read up on previous bills – monthly consumption should be stated on your previous energy bills which will provide a template to estimate your annual usage.

  • Put in a smart meter – this provides real-time usage. It will send this information directly to your current energy supplier so you can see which appliances and gadgets cost the most.

Keeping cool without using appliances

  • Spray your curtains with water, which will make them damp and cool – blinds are a solid investment - reflecting the heat through the window in the summer and keeping cool in the winter.

  • Close your blinds during the day – Sunlight will be deflected back out of the window, reducing a lot of heat during the day. This can also assist hay fever sufferers by minimizing the amount of pollen getting into your room.

Tips to maximise the use of your air conditioner:

  • Place ice cubes in front of your air conditioning unit - fans don't cost much to run, so putting a tub of ice cubes in front of one when you (or your pets) get too hot could assist with sleeping on a humid night.

  • Use your plastic bottles again – Refill and freeze them. They take longer to melt and can be used in front of a fan, air conditioning unit or as a 'cold water bottle'.

Additional home temperature reduction tips:

  • Don't cook as much indoors – this will increase the temperature in your home. Choose barbeques and introduce salads.

  • Turn off any electric appliances that you do not heat, as they generate heat.

  • Hydrate by drinking plenty of water.
