Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Greece will go ahead in Athens tomorrow as scheduled despite the Greek government announcing three days of national mourning.
It follows the death of at least 78 migrants in a boating disaster after their craft capsized off the southern coast on Wednesday night.
The death toll is expected to rise, according to local news reports, with dozens of people still unaccounted for.
104 migrants were rescued but reports say up to 750 people were aboard the vessel.
Greece is observing three days of mourning as a result and a number of events have been postponed, including large sporting events in the country.
But following talks between the Greek government and UEFA, Ireland’s game with Greece has been given the go-ahead at the Opap Arena in Athens.
A minute silence will be observed before kick-off to mourn those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
