Ireland 'swaps' with Spain as weekend forecast revealed

It's not quite a heatwave but we'll definitely take it as the stunning sunshine Ireland has enjoyed for most of the past week is set to continue into the weekend.

Friday and Saturday could see temperatures reach the low 20s and while Sunday will be slightly cooler, Ireland is in for a primarily dry and warm weekend.

This comes in stark contrast to the weather being experienced in Spain as the Mediterranean country endures intense thunderstorms, rain and flooding in some parts.

The difference was highlighted by respected online forecaster Alan O'Reilly, who mans the @CarlowWeather Twitter account.

He tweeted: "Intense flash flooding in parts of Spain recently with 87mm in one hour! More thunderstorms for Spain in the coming days too. We’ve swapped sunshine and rain with Spain it seems."

According to Alan, Ireland could see temperatures reach as high as 22C today and while national forecaster Met Eireann is not quite that optimistic, they are in agreement that we're in for plenty of sun and heat.

Throughout Friday afternoon and evening, conditions will be dry with sunny spells, with temperatures cracking the 20C mark at various points of the day. It will be a bit cooler on coasts, particularly in the north and east. It will remain dry and clear overnight, with just some patchy mist and fog to contend with, and temperatures not dropping below 6C.

A similar day is forecast on Saturday in that it will be mainly dry and highest temperatures will be between 18C and 21C. Leinster and east Munster will enjoy the best of the sunshine, with slightly cloudier conditions expected in the west and north, where light drizzle is possible at times. Any light showers on Saturday evening won't last long, however, and dry conditions will return overnight, with temperatures between 7C and 11C.

Sunday will be a slightly cooler day, with temperatures of between 14C and 18C forecast, but the north of the country will feel even colder. Less sun is expected but it will be primarily dry and cloudy, with a shower or two possible in the south in the early stages of the day before the sun returns into the afternoon.
