Ireland snow map shows areas set for flurries as Met Eireann pinpoint day freezing weather returns

A freezing end to March is on the cards, with snow maps showing flurries returning to some areas later in the week.

Met Eireann has advised the weather will feel much colder this weekend after a very unsettled few days.

Widespread rain, strong winds, hail, thunder and lightning are all forecast up until Saturday when things take a chilly turn.

A brief blast of wintry weather will see temperatures drop as low as freezing on Saturday night, while the national forecaster says Sunday will be “rather chilly”.

It’s forecast for the weekend reads: “It looks set to be a day of sunny spells and scattered showers on Saturday. However, there is the chance of a spell of more persistent rain affecting southern counties for a time. Highest temperatures of 10C to 13C with mostly light winds.

“A colder night is forecast for Saturday night with clear spells and isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C in moderate northerly breezes.

“A bright and rather chilly day is expected on Sunday with sunny spells and a few passing showers. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C in a fresh northerly breeze.”

Meanwhile, long-range weather maps show snow flurries falling in northern and eastern areas on Sunday.

In the meantime, Ireland’s weather will be very unsettled with showery conditions overall.

Met Eireann’s forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday reads: “Blustery Wednesday with sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers will become more widespread across the country, merging to longer spells of rain in places. Some of the showers will be heavy with hail and lightning likely. Top temperatures of 9C to 12C in fresh and gusty south to southwest winds, strong on windward coasts with wave overtopping around high tide.

Fresh and breezy overnight Wednesday with clear spells and blustery showers, the showers most frequent across the western half of the country. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 7C in a moderate to fresh southerly breeze.

“Another day of sunny spells and showers on Thursday. Some of the showers will be heavy and prolonged bringing the possibility of hail and lightning. Maximum temperatures of 10C to 13C in fresh and gusty southerly winds with the potential for wave overtopping around high tide.

“It looks set to become increasingly windy on Thursday night with showers or longer spells of rain pushing in from the Atlantic. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 7C in strong and gusty southwest winds, with gales likely along windward coasts with potential for wave overtopping around high tide.

“A windy day on Friday with widespread showers, some heavy and prolonged, especially in the west and north of the country. There is the continued chance for hail and some thundery downpours. Highest temperatures of 9C to 12C with strong and gusty southwest winds, veering westerly later.

“Showers will become mostly confined to Atlantic coastal counties on Friday night with long dry and clear spells developing elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 6C in strong westerly winds easing overnight.”
