An eerie rumbling shook Ireland during the early hours of Saturday morning, as a 2.5 magnitude earthquake hit Donegal.
It happened near Glenveagh National Park at 12.32am at a depth of around 5km.
The Irish National Seismic Network said the earthquake was felt throughout the county, with some of the reports coming in from Letterkenny, Ballybofey and Falcarragh.

A spokesperson confirmed: "At 00:32 UTC on the 6th of May 2023 an M2.5 earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 5km. The event occurred near Glenveagh National Park in northern Donegal, Ireland.
"The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) has received reports that the event was felt throughout the Donegal area."
Following the early morning earthquake, social media was abuzz with comments from people who reported hearing an eerie rumbling noise.
One person posted on Twitter: “Anyone else hear that loud rumbling over Donegal at 1:30am Sat may 6th? There was no shaking which is strange if it was an earthquake?”
Another wrote: “Yes we felt and heard it! I know it wasn’t thunder.”
Someone else commented: “Aha, I was wondering what that rumbling noise was. Didn't really feel much, but heard it for several seconds.”
A fourth reported: ”Heard it too, like nothing I’ve heard before!”.
Another Twitter user said: “I’m in Kerrykeel and it was about the same, scary enough that.”
Someone else posted: “I was in my kitchen and my mum walked in and all of a sudden we heard a rumbling noise and she thought it was the wind and I looked out the window and there wasn't any breeze. I thought it was a tractor passing by the house but didn't see anything. Never heard that before.”
To which another person responded: “Exactly yea it sounded like a really loud vehicle beside my house it was so weird, very strange that there was no shaking.”
According to the INSN, a -0.3 magnitude earthquake was also recorded in Co Wexford on April 28.
Anyone who felt the Donegal earthquake is asked to make a report on the INSN website.
