Ireland's top 10 most romantic spots to propose on a leap year

It's almost that time of the year again - when couples across Ireland bicker over what to do for Valentine's Day.

But this time it comes with the added bonus of a leap year - February 29, when a lady is given the chance to get down on one knee.

And for the year that's in it, here's a list of Ireland's 10 most romantic proposal spots to inspire you to take the plunge:

1. Glendalough

One of Ireland's most spectacular visitors' destinations, there's a huge amount to discover around the glorious Co Wicklow valley.

2. Cliffs of Moher

The majestic cliffs in Co Clare are an obvious choice, but make sure to check the weather forecast before heading out to drop the knee!

3. Giants Causeway

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Ireland's most instantly recognisable landmarks, and the stunning stone formations of the Co Antrim would provide an unforgettable backdrop for any proposal.

4. Sandymount Strand

While the capital doesn't feature heavily on this list, the scenic backdrop of Sandymount Strand undoubtedly deserves consideration, particularly for any proud Dub.

5. Newgrange

The prehistoric monument in Co Meath is steeped in history, and anywhere surrounding the ancient tomb would be an ideal place to ask for your husband-to-be’s hand.

6. Aran Islands

Get your sea legs ready and take to the Aran Islands, which offer the chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of ordinary life.

With a ferry available daily from Doolin and Galway, any one of Inishmore, Inishmaan or Inisheer could be your dream proposal spot.

7. Cushendon Caves, Co. Antrim

A must for any Game of Thrones fan, you can have the proposal of your dreams at Cushendon Caves, an iconic filming location of the HBO series.

8. Glencar Waterfall

Leitrim's famous waterfall is just a stone's throw from Glencar Lough, and is an ideal, tranquil spot for anyone looking for a private, and scenic, proposal.

9. Muckross House

No list of Ireland's most destinations would be complete without Co Kerry, and Muckross, which is part of the breathtaking Killarney National Park, will be high on the list for anyone planning a proposal in the Kingdom.

10.  Gweedore

Donegal is a must-have in any list on Ireland's most picturesque locations, and the Gaeltacht spot of Gweedore is no exception. There are fishing lakes aplenty, and the Magheraclogher Beach would make an ideal proposal location - assuming the weather cooperates.
