Ireland's newly appointed prime minister has spoken out against Israel's handling of the conflict in Gaza, accusing the Israeli government of prioritizing revenge over reason. In a recent television interview, Taoiseach Simon Harris criticized the Netanyahu government for allowing a 'humanitarian catastrophe' to unfold in Gaza, impacting innocent civilians.
Harris emphasized Ireland's condemnation of Hamas and its support for Israel's right to security but expressed concern over the escalating violence and civilian casualties in Gaza. He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged fellow European Union leaders to formally recognize the state of Palestine as part of a peaceful solution.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of like-minded countries coming together to recognize Palestine and expressed Ireland's readiness to do so. He believes that EU recognition of Palestine could generate positive momentum towards resolving the conflict.
In response to Ireland's intentions, the Israeli foreign ministry criticized the move, arguing that recognizing Palestinian statehood would reward terrorism. Despite this opposition, Harris remains steadfast in his stance and is determined to push for EU recognition of Palestine.
