Ireland's Oscar success through the years

With the recent announcement of not one but two Irish films receiving Oscar nominations this year, The Banshees of Inisherin and An Cailin Ciuin, we decided to look back at our success at the prestigious film awards down through the years.

We may be a small island in the middle of the Atlantic, however, we have made waves at the annual Academy Awards. Fingers crossed that 2023 will see even more Irish actors and films added to the Academy Award's history books.

Check out the Irish films that have had success at the Oscars down through the years, from 1989's My Left Foot to more recent times with Room in 2015.

My Left Foot

Back in 1990, My Left Foot received a nomination for Best Picture at the 62nd Academy Awards in Los Angeles. The comedy-drama film, directed by Jim Sheridan, received five Oscar nominations in total that year with Daniel Day-Lewis winning Best Actor and Brenda Fricker picking up the award for Best Supporting Actress.

In the Name of the Father

1993 saw the crime-drama film In the Name of the Father receive an impressive seven nominations at the Oscars including Best Actor and Best Director and Best Picture. Sadly, none of the nominations proved to be winners.

Room

Written by the Irish-Canadian playwright, Emma Donoghue, Room was claimed as one of the best films of the year in 2015. The drama film picked up four nominations at the Oscars that year including Best Picture.
