Ireland’s most battered bridge struck by ambulance in latest incident

Ireland’s most battered bridge has been struck again by an ambulance in its latest incident.

The Shanty Bridge on the Blakestown Road in Mulhuddart is notorious for its low-hanging overpass which has caught many a driver by surprise.

And this afternoon, an ambulance became the latest victim as it became wedged underneath the overpass.

The structure that takes traffic to the N3 has caught out scores of unlucky truckers and other vehicles over the years, with the brilliant Facebook page Ireland's Most Battered Bridge reporting on the latest incidents.

It said of today's incident: "More hits than the Beatles."

Social media users were amused by the latest incident.

One local commented: "Hope they don't need an ambulance for the driver."

Another said: "Only in Blanchardstown would you see an ambulance hit that bridge."

Back in 2020, Sinn Fein TD Paul Donnelly confirmed that a new electronic sign was set up to prevent any more unfortunate crashes.

A garda spokesman confirmed to Dublin Live that they attended the incident this afternoon.

He said: "Gardaí attended the incident of a road traffic collision where an ambulance collided with a bridge, on Blakestown Road, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin at approximately 13:45pm on Thursday 19th May 2022."

Dublin Live has contacted the National Ambulance Service for comment.
