Ireland’s most battered bridge claims Brennan’s Bread delivery truck

A Brennan’s Bread delivery truck has become the latest victim of Ireland's most battered bridge.

The Shanty Bridge on Blakestown Road in Mulhuddart is infamous for being the bane of countless trucks and lorries over the years. And the bridge took yet another vehicle down after the bread truck crashed into the low-hanging overpass.

An image shared by Ireland's Most Battered Bridge Facebook page shows the crumpled-up remains of the truck with the caption: “Just when we thought the new signage was working well”.

One amused local said: “So that's what battered bread looks like”. Another added: “Someone's not getting today's bread today”.

Other witty social media users described it as a “Sliced pan,” someone else said: “a toast to the new signage”.

A final person commented: “That van is toast. Today's bread, not today”.

A sign displaying the bridge's 2.6m height was added to the bridge but it still hasn't stopped drivers from accidentally smashing into it. Back in 2020, Sinn Fein TD Paul Donnelly confirmed that the sign was set up to prevent any more unfortunate crashes.

The Dublin West TD said on Facebook: "New electronic sign at Mulhuddart bridge. At long last, the council has finally put in new safety measures, an electronic sign, that should be enough for drivers to warn them not to proceed!

"Sinn Fein have been fighting for additional safety measures for several years at this spot so this is very welcome news."

The bridge is known for a number of unfortunate traffic mishaps over the years and the Facebook page shared the news with a cheeky post. They said: "A huge thank you to Paul Donnelly TD and Sinn Fein Cllr Aaron O'Rourke who constantly lobbied Fingal County Council for new road traffic safety measures to be installed in our area.

"It only took about 20 crashes for them to listen. Thank you."

Dublin Live has contacted An Garda Siochana for comment on today's incident.
