Ireland's 'mini heatwave' to bring 18C sun for days before big change as 'weather extremes' not ruled out

Ireland will enjoy the unseasonably sunny weather into the weekend as the 'mini heatwave' continues to bring 18C temperatures to areas across the country.

The mercury will hit those heights on Thursday and Friday, before reaching highs of 17C on Saturday and Sunday.

However, the temperatures won't stay this high forever, and Met Eireann has pinpointed when the hot spell will end.

According to the national forecaster, temperatures will return to average temperatures for March on Monday and Tuesday.

Rain is also likely to return from the middle of next week onwards, with "cooler but settled weather" expected.

Forecasters are not ruling out "weather extremes" before the month is out, despite no indications of stormy conditions on the horizon.

Met Eireann's long-range forecast until March 31 says that the weather "is likely to turn more changeable with temperatures reverting back to more seasonal highs, or possibly below normal" later in the week.

The forecast adds: "Rainfall figures should however remain below average with no significant winds expected, at least at this stage. However, extremes of weather cannot be ruled out at this time of year either."

Before then, Thursday will be mainly dry with the odd isolated shower.

The best of the sunshine will be across Leinster and east Munster but cloud will break up a bit in other areas as the day goes on, with highest temperatures of 13C to 17 or 18C, warmest in the south and east.

Thursday night will be mainly dry with a mix of cloud and some clear spells, with the best of these in southern parts.

Some patches of mist and fog will develop under those clear spells in light and variable breezes, with lowest temperatures of 3 to 7C generally but dipping lower locally in southern parts under any long clear spells.

A forecaster said for Friday: "Any mist and fog patches will clear tomorrow morning and while it will be quite cloudy for a time, it will become sunnier as the day progresses.

"It will be largely dry, however the odd shower may break out, mainly in parts of Leinster. A little bit of sea fog may encroach onto some coastal parts at times. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18C, a little lower though in coastal parts of the east and north."

"Dry with clear spells [on Friday night]. Areas of mist and fog will develop in a light east to northeast or variable wind. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 5C.

"Mist and fog will clear from most areas on Saturday morning but may linger along some coasts. It will be a dry day with sunny spells and a light easterly breeze. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17C, coolest near southern and eastern coasts."

They added for Saturday night: "Dry with clear spells and light easterly breezes. Mist and fog will develop in the north and east. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 5C.

"Mist and fog will clear from most areas on Sunday morning but may persist along parts of the north and east coast. It will be dry with sunny spells and light east to southeast or variable winds. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17C.

"Continuing dry with clear spells [on Sunday night] and mist and fog will form in the north and east in light and variable breezes. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 6C.

"Sunny spells and well scattered showers [on Monday]. Highest temperatures of 9 to 15 degrees, warmest in the west, with light easterly or variable winds. "
