Ireland lightning tracker LIVE: Thunderstorm map tracks next strikes amid ominous Met Eireann alert

Ireland is set to be zapped by lightning with Met Eireann issuing an urgent double weather warning.

A Status Yellow alert for both thunderstorms and rain was in place and expired at 10pm on Monday.

It affected most of Ireland with 20 counties included in the warning - Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary and Waterford.

Separately, a yellow thunderstorm warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry has been issued by the Met Office, valid from 12noon until 9pm on Tuesday.

Met Eireann has predicted more thunderstorms throughout the rest of this week as rain breaks the glorious conditions Ireland has enjoyed recently. However, the heat is still set to stick around with temperatures in the mid to high 20s at times, making it feel “muggy”.

According to Met Eireann, it will be “very warm throughout the week with sunny spells along with heavy showers or thunderstorms in some parts.” The national forecaster added that “the UV Index and Pollen Count will be high”.

You can track exactly where and when the storms will hit next by using Windy’s interactive lightning tracker map below.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of the weather, Ireland’s meteorological agency said: “Showers for many areas Monday, some heavy and slow-moving with a chance of thunderstorms and spot flooding, especially in the east, north and midlands. It will be drier and brighter in the west and southwest. Warm and humid with highest temperatures of 20C to 25C in a light north to northwest breeze. There will be coastal fog at times too.

“Showers will persist early Monday night, with the continued chance of isolated thunderstorms and spot flooding. Showers will become more isolated towards morning with clear spells developing. Mist and fog patches will set in again. A warm night with temperatures not falling below 14C to 16C in light northerly or variable winds.

“Very warm or hot on Tuesday with sunny spells and a light southeasterly breeze. Scattered heavy showers or thunderstorms will break out during the day, most likely in the west or midlands with a further risk of spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 23C to 27C, although less warm along coasts due to sea breezes. Some coastal mist or fog may linger.

“A muggy night Tuesday with showers early on in the west dying out. Dry and clear in many areas with some mist and fog forming. Temperatures not falling below 13C to 15C with a light easterly breeze.

“Very warm or hot Wednesday with temperatures reaching 23C to 27C for most, less warm along coasts. Good spells of hazy sunshine although scattered heavy downpours or thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and evening, most likely in the west and midlands. Light southeast breezes.

“Another mild night Wednesday with temperatures of 13C to 15C and very light breezes. Lingering showers will die out with a dry night for many. Turning misty with some fog possible.

“Very warm Thursday with sunny spells, although hit or miss heavy showers or thunderstorms are likely to develop during the day. Highs largely between 22C to 26C with little to no wind aside from sea breezes.

“Some showers expected again on Friday mixed with hazy sunny spells. Highs of 22C to 25C, a little lower along coasts.

“Humid and warm weather with showers likely to continue over the weekend, although possibly turning cloudier.”
