Ireland: ESRI Confirms Problem Gambling On The Rise At An Alarming Rate

image

Concerns around gambling are nothing new in Ireland. Just last month, an Institute of Public Health report flagged issues about the country’s underage gambling problem. Now, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) recently unveiled a report, sounding the alarm about a concerning upswing in problem gambling rates, having an impact on one in 30 adults in the country. The unfortunate reality is that compulsive behaviour has increased tenfold since 2019, which has spurred the need to further promote responsible gambling practices.

A Disturbing Trend

The ESRI's latest report, the result of extensive research, presents a sobering picture of problem gambling in Ireland. It not only highlights the current situation but also offers a glimpse into what the future could hold if robust measures are not taken as a matter of urgency.

According to the report based on anonymous online panels made up of 2850 adults, one in 30 adults in Ireland now grapples with problem gambling. This translates to approximately 130,000 people suffering as a result of gambling-related harms, which demonstrates the widespread nature of the issue. This represents a significant increase from previous years and ten times more than the figures estimated for 2019.

Several factors are believed to have contributed to this surge, including the ease of access to online gambling platforms, intensified marketing efforts by gambling companies, and the socioeconomic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have led more people to seek refuge or entertainment in gambling.

The Human Toll

Perhaps one could say that the most distressing aspect of this upward trend is the profound impact it has on individuals, families, and community networks. For instance, problem gambling often leads to severe financial, mental, and social consequences for the person directly involved as well as their wider network. The research identified that the average person suffering from problem gambling spent over $1050 a month on gambling.

The ESRI report also shed light on the fact that many problem gamblers find themselves mired in debt, grappling with anxiety, depression, and related mental health issues. Moreover, these problems tend to cascade through families and communities, straining relationships and heightening the demand for support services.

Urgent Action Required

In response to this alarming surge, it is evident that there is an urgent need for stronger regulatory measures in Ireland. These could encompass a wide range of initiatives, including more stringent advertising guidelines, limitations on betting stakes, and a requirement for operators to commit to encouraging responsible gambling by offering adequate support and resources for individuals who develop gambling problems.

In tandem with regulatory efforts and preemptive policies, it is essential to offer support to those already affected by problem gambling. The ESRI report underscores the importance of expanding access to treatment and support services for problem gamblers. This includes both prevention and intervention initiatives, such as public awareness campaigns and helplines for individuals seeking assistance.

A Call for Collaboration and Sharing Information

Although Ireland is in the process of establishing a new independent statutory body to deal with the issues more effectively, the escalating rates of problem gambling underscore the need for coordinated efforts among all key stakeholders, including government entities, gambling operators, and addiction support services. It is clear that by working together, it is possible for these parties to establish a more responsible and sustainable gambling environment for the people of  Ireland.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that Ireland is not alone in grappling with gambling harms. Many countries worldwide face similar challenges and are taking action to implement strategies to protect their populations from the adverse effects of gambling addiction. It is, therefore, important to encourage cooperation beyond national borders, too. By learning from international best practices, sharing knowledge, and learning from the experiences of others, Ireland can better equip itself to address this problem more effectively.

Final Thoughts: A Wake-Up Call for Ireland

To sum up, the ESRI's report serves as a wake-up call for Ireland. The alarming increase in problem gambling rates necessitates immediate action from all key stakeholders involved in the space. It's not just about dealing with the consequences; it's about implementing proactive measures to safeguard vulnerable individuals and communities. It is clear that it is only through collective efforts that Ireland can create a safer and more responsible gambling environment, ensuring that the country’s reputation is not tarnished by the shadow of addiction.
