Ireland defender Cyrus Christie open to foreign move as he mulls over future

Cyrus Christie has left the door open for a move to the continent amid interest from Italian and Spanish clubs.

The Republic of Ireland defender will finally escape his Fulham nightmare when his contract expires on July 1.

But as it stands, a permanent move to Swansea City - where he impressed on loan since January - is not on the cards due to the Swans budget constraints.

Serie A side Bologna and La Liga outfit Elche have been strongly linked with the 29-year-old and Roma were even keeping tabs two years ago.

Asked if a foreign move appeals, Christie said yesterday: “Yes, definitely, to play abroad is something that I've looked at before.

“There have been times when I’ve had options to go there but Fulham didn't let me go. So it's definitely something that I’d like to explore.

“I've had a lot of contact over this summer with a few teams abroad. So we'll see how this goes.

“I need to sit down and talk to my family and see what is best for them when those options come up and are concrete.”

Christie continued: “It's quite difficult to deal with teams abroad in the way they do things. It's a different structure.

“But it's something that I've always wanted to do so we'll see what happens over the next few weeks.”

But Christie won’t rule out a return to Swansea - if the Championship club put an offer on the table.

“I really enjoyed my time there but I don’t think they’ve much of a budget this year. They took me in from day one, especially the fans.

“It’s somewhere I’d consider going if they want me back.”

Christie also lifted the lid on his frustrating first half of the season where he was often made to train on his own at Fulham, having not been in Marco Silva’s plans.

“It was tough,” he said. “At times I wasn’t allowed at the training ground when anyone was in there. I’d go to train on my own a lot of the time.

“I’ve not got a clue (why). No one gave me an answer. It was a decision they made. I just got on with it. There’s always opportunity around the corner and you have to be ready.”

Meanwhile, Christie believes that Michael Obafemi's sensational pace can strike fear into Ireland’s Nations League rivals.

They were Swansea City team-mates since January, when Christie joined on loan.

Obafemi smashed 12 Championship goals and 11 in his last 19 games and it was that form that earned him an Ireland recall.

The 21-year-old hasn’t featured since winning his one and only cap in Martin O’Neill’s final game in charge back in late 2018.

But quizzed on Obafemi, Christie said: “He has been unreal this season since I joined.

“I don’t know what he was like for the first six months, but he picked up, he was scoring goals, he was a threat.

“On top of that, he’s a lovely lad and a funny character. But he’s so quick and he’s a threat. I’m sure everyone will see what he’s capable of.”

It was put to Christie that pace alone won’t be enough to succeed as a senior international.

But in a flash, Christie replied: “When you’re that quick, it can be! But there’s more to his game than pace. He’s a good finisher.

“When he gets on the ball and he turns the defence, it can be frightening. He’s got pace, can dribble, go past people and he puts himself in the right positions.

“He might not be in the game a lot, but when he is and he plays on that back shoulder of the defence, he can get himself in there and score goals.”
