Ireland AM star Alan Hughes says Kerry priest's homophobic homily 'not worth wasting time on'

Alan Hughes said the Kerry priest who is under fire for a homophobic homily is not worth giving the time of day to.

Fr Sean Sheehy has been embroiled in huge controversy and public debate since a clip of him delivering a sermon on Sunday where he declared transgender people, homosexuality and abortion as a “mortal sin” went viral.

Ireland AM host Alan said: “He’s not even worth giving the time to. He really is. I mean we have come so far, and yeah, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and yeah when you look at it he is only doing his teaching, but I think generally people have come on so far.”

The TV host who has been with his husband panto director Karl Broderick for almost three decades added: “But he just isn’t worth even wasting time on it.

“And I think everybody knows we have come further than that now and the people who stood up and walked out, and even the reaction we got this morning on the show, saying it is a disgrace and it doesn’t represent Ireland the way we are now.

“But it does represent some people still and there will always be homophobic people out there...”

Speaking to his co-presenters Muireann O’Connell and Tommy Bowe yesterday morning on Ireland AM as they reacted to the front page news story, a deflated Alan said: “He doesn’t know me but is condemning everything about me. I’m a mortal sin, I’m a walking sin.
