Iranian Paralympian Mehrzad Aims For Historic Three-Peat In Paris

Morteza Mehrzadselakjani exploring the Pyramid of Giza

Iranian Paralympian Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, known as Mehrzad, is a towering figure in the world of sitting volleyball. Standing at an impressive height of two meters and 46 centimeters, he holds the title of the tallest Paralympian in history and the joint-second tallest man globally.

With two Paralympic gold medals already under his belt, Mehrzad is a key player in Iran's men's sitting volleyball team, contributing significantly to their consecutive gold medal wins in Rio and Tokyo.

Despite his remarkable success, Mehrzad's journey into the sport was unconventional. He only began playing sitting volleyball for the national team six months before the Rio Games after being discovered on a television program.

Diagnosed with acromegaly at a young age, Mehrzad faced physical challenges due to a pelvis fracture that hindered the growth of his right leg. However, he turned these limitations into opportunities through sitting volleyball, where his unique physique became an asset on the court.

Reflecting on the impact of the sport on his life, Mehrzad expressed gratitude for the transformation it brought. He emphasized how playing sitting volleyball helped him leverage his physical attributes and excel in the game.

Despite being recognized as the best player in sitting volleyball multiple times, Mehrzad remains humble and credits his teammates for their collective success. He views each member of the team as essential, highlighting the strength of their unity.

Iran has a rich history of dominance in men's sitting volleyball, with seven gold medals in nine Paralympic Games since Seoul 1988. The pressure to maintain this legacy weighs heavily on Mehrzad and his teammates as they prepare for the 2024 Paris Games.

Head coach Rezaei acknowledged the high expectations placed on the team by the Iranian people, emphasizing the significance of winning gold in sitting volleyball. For Mehrzad and his fellow athletes, the pursuit of a three-peat in Paris represents both a challenge and an opportunity to solidify their status as champions.
